Oh my gosh I can still taste the Podda Nadir majhider Ilish from Sonar Tori! One of the absolute best dishes I have ever had in my life! I was shocked at how much I loved this and it was the perfect meal to end a great day !
Sonar Tori by Ambuja Neotia is situated in the heart of Saltake. Known for removing the stuffiness from fine dining with surgical precision and flourish of big flavour, I was really excited to see how this Sonar Ilish Utsob would translate in such a high-end, formal setting.
The special festival menu is quite simply spectacular as the interior itself. A soft satin red and golden colour scheme to create a space that is ineffably airy. Walls are clad in beautiful art deco sconces and an array of artwork that rivets the eye in the softest manner. The ambience and vibe is easily replicated with Raj Mahal and the requisite anglo Indian era of Bengal !
আমি ইলিশে বিশ্বাসী ! সোনার তরি তে শুরু হয়েছে Sonar Ilish Utsob ! মনে আছে ?? ২০১৯ এ বাংলাদেশ থেকে প্রায় সাত বছর পর ভারতে এসেছিল ৩০.৫ টন পদ্মারইলিশ বোঝাই ট্রাক। আমরা কলকাতাসহ পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বাঙালিরা চেয়েই থাকি পদ্মার ইলিশের দিকে ।
Hilsha — The Queen of Fish Festival

Sonartori is serving succulent childhood recipes beyond borders and the ubiquitous recipes which are famous from generation to generation.
On the menu, a few classics appear alongside inventive new dishes. The ‘Queen – Ilish’ was always one of our favourites and continues to be so.
Ilish Macher Tikki – flat dumpling of boneless Hilsha fish – exhibited a beautiful craftplay of Hilsha Tell and used in a rather novel sense. Culinary utilization of almost a waste portion at its best to give you top knotch experience of Boneless Hilsha !! This was just to die for. So flavoursome and rich, just a beautiful dish. Fresh way to commence the meal. A kick start to the date with Queen !
ILish Bhaja – Fried dame cut of Hilsha – The cut was cooked to perfection and the trimmings complimented each other well. The fish was moist, firm and flavorful, light and very crispy.
Choto begun ar kalo jire diye ilisher jhol – Hilsha stew simmered with black cumin and brinjal – The fact that I can not only remember what I had few days back, but that it still leaves my mouth watering just thinking about it really is testament to the quality of the food experience I had with this simple Jhol.
Podda Nadir majhider Ilish – Hilsha cooked with Garlic, Tomato, Onion & local curry paste of coastal Bangladesh – It certainly packed a punch ! A huge single dame cut of tender Hilsha, meaty goodness what can only have come from some kind of super-fish. One spoonful of this gravy and all my stress were washed away by the explosion of meaty, spicy flavour. It didn’t matter that it was a typical rainy windy day outside. I could close my eyes and find myself in the warm sun of the deep south.
Sonar Tori Hilsha Platter – Gobindobhog Bhat, Macher Tel, Ilish Bhaja, Pui diye Ilish er Matha, Choto begun ar kalo jire diye ilisher jhol ar Sorshe Ilish, Ilish Macher Dim er Bhaja, Bhapa Sandesh. Probably the best thali I have eaten in quite some time. A huge platter with some insane dishes.
Impressive. Innovative. Interesting. All describe the wonders of Sonar Tori as a place of truly a fine dining experience. From the impeccable service, to the offerings even of regular menu, the flavors and delicacies are a unique combination for even a city renown for excellent gastrointestinal delights. It was, quite frankly, one of the most well orchestrated dining experiences; one feels both comfortable and well-taken care of, and feels the details in both the food and the crisp service which attends to the smallest detail.
